Award for YogaMobility Fundraising

Award for YogaMobility Fundraising

YMFLP1YogaMobility has been given the Runner-up award in the WCVA Wales Third Sector Awards in recognition of our efforts in innovative fundraising.

The Award, which was open to more than 10,000 charities, co-ops and social enterprises in Wales, recognises the work done by the Funky Love Posse – a 14-piece band made up of disabled and able bodied musicians – in raising around £2,500 a year by donating the £500 fee they receive from professional gigs.  This provides YogaMobility with an important source of unrestricted funds at a time when generating income can be particularly tough.

Funky Love Posse

The Funky Love Posse was developed by YogaMobility students, supporters and tutors with an interest in music.  Over the years, the Funky Love  Posse have developed their musical talents to the point that they can now play professionally – in recent years, headlining Cardiff’s Unity Festival and, in 2012, supporting Charlotte Church at the Paralympic opening celebrations in Cardiff Bay.

Members of YogaMobility and the Funky Love Posse were presented with their award by BBC Wales presenter Jason Mohammad at a WCVA Dinner in Cardiff on 31st January 2013.

Your Benefits Are Changing

Your Benefits Are Changing

Comments Off on Your Benefits Are Changing

What is the Welfare Reform?

The Welfare Reform Act 2012 is the biggest change to the benefit system in many years. The changes will affect working age people in receipt of benefits. These changes will be brought in gradually over the next few years but some changes will be coming into effect as early as April 2013.

What are the key changes?

1.Bedroom Tax

The Bedroom Tax is one of the first things to be fully introduced in April 2013 and will affect everyone receiving Housing Benefit who has a” spare” bedroom.

Please note you will NOT be affected by the ‘Bedroom Tax’ if:

  • You live in a one bedroom flat or bedsit
  • You or your partner are old enough to receive pension credits. In April 2013 the pension credit age will be around 61 years and 6 months

What is a “Spare” Bedroom?

Under the new rules if you have more bedrooms than the Government says you need, you will lose part of your housing benefit. The new rules mean you will be allocated one bedroom for:

  • Each adult couple
  • Any other person aged 16 or over
  • 2 children of the same sex under the age of 16
  • 2 children under the age of 10 regardless of their sex
  • Any other child
  • A carer (who does not normally live with you) if you or your partner need overnight care. Evidence to support the need for an overnight carer will be requested,

It does not matter how the spare room is used, the new rules will apply even if:

  • You and your partner sleep apart because of a medical condition
  • The main residence of your child is at another address, but you have a spare room for when they stay with you.

What happens if you have a “spare” bedroom?

  • If you are claiming Housing Benefit and have one spare bedroom, your benefit will be reduced by 14%of the rent you pay every week.
  • If you have two or more spare bedrooms it will be reduced by 25% per week.

 2. Benefit Cap

There will be a Benefit Cap introduced in April 2013. No household will be able to receive more than £26,000 per year for families or £18,200 for single people, no matter what their circumstances. This works out at £350 per week for a single person and £500 per week for a couple or lone parent.

3. Universal Credit

The government is ending Income Support, Income Based Jobseekers allowance, Income Related Employment and Support Allowance, Housing Benefit, Child Tax Credit and Working Tax Credit. All these benefits will be replaced with one single payment called Universal Credit. This will be a monthly payment and you will need to claim online.

4. Disability Living Allowance (DLA)

From June 2013 DLA will be replaced by a new Personal Independence Payment (PIP). Existing DLA claimants will be contacted by the Department for Work and Pensions and claimants will need to apply for the new PIP.  The DWP will then assess and inform the claimant whether they are eligible for the payment or not. DLA payments will remain in place until the outcome of the PIP is decided, but will cease immediately if the claimant is eligible for a PIP.

A big thank you to our supporters

A big thank you to our supporters

YogaMobility would like to take this opportunity to thank the individuals and organisations that have supported us this year.

After running as an unregistered charity for more than 30 years, YogaMobility reached the £5,000 turnover threshold for registering as a charity in 2009, allowing us to become a registered charity in February 2010. This year could mark another landmark, as by the end of the financial year, YogaMobility expects to have grown past the £25,000 turnover threshold that means we will no longer be classed as a small charity.

We are particularly grateful for the hard work of our Yoga Events Committee who have helped raise more than £1,000 this year, including £700 from our annual garden party (no mean feat given the appalling weather this summer) £300 from the sponsored hobble and £100 from the clothes swap in September.

We are also grateful to the Funky Love Posse who donate the proceeds of their gigs to YogaMobility, adding an additional £2,000 a year to our unrestricted reserves.

This year we have also received significant grant funding to allow us to continue to fund our classes at Sbectrwm Community Enterprise Centre and Roath Church House, and to allow us to open a new class in 2013. So far this year we have received £17,041 in grants:

  • £10,000  toward the costs of running four YogaMobility classes from Comic Relief (Small Grants)
  • £4,700 for the tutors fees for one class for one year from Santander Community Fund
  • £1,352 toward the costs of opening a new class from Co-operative Community Fund
  • £989 toward the cost of new equipment from Sport Relief Community Cash

Finally, we would like to thank all of our members and supporters whose donations add up to more than £5,000 every year.

Garden Party postponed because of bad weather

Garden Party postponed because of bad weather

Comments Off on Garden Party postponed because of bad weather

Unfortunately, YogaMobility’s annual garden party (due to take place on Sunday 22nd July) has fallen victim to the bad weather.

With more heavy showers forecast throughout the week, Mary and Jason have reluctantly accepted that the ground is going to be too muddy to run the event.  Rather than cancel the event altogether (which would deprive YogaMobility of our main fundraising event), we have decided to postpone until September when, hopefully, we should have some better weather.

We will post further details soon.

New YogaMobility Video

Comments Off on New YogaMobility Video

We have put together a 14 minute video to show people what YogaMobility classes are, who they are for, and what people get from them.

Obviously, the video can only offer a taste of a full 2-hour class, but people who are interested in attending a YogaMobility class can watch it to get a better idea of what a class is like.  We also hope that supporters and potential supporters of YogaMobility will view the video to get a better idea of the important work that they are helping us carry out.
